It's not pain unil it reaches the brain.

That makes sense, doesn't it?  If you've ever banged your hand on something and started rubbing it right away the bulk of the pain never actually reaches the brain.

 

Your pain can be controlled by the way that you have been trained to think about it.  Some people have pain in parts that they no longer even have.  It's called phantom limb pain. That's because pain is generated in the brain so if it can make you feel something that is not there it could be trained to not feel something that is there right?  The answer is yes.
